Samoa 2020

Samoa has a unique and rich 3,000-year-old culture and since the arrival of Missionaries in 1830 Christianity has been an intrinsic part of the social fabric. In June 2017 the Samoan Parliament amended the constitution to transform the country from a secular to Christian nation – “Samoa is a Christian nation founded of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Come and explore the stunning beauty of this South Pacific paradise, enjoy the warm welcome of its people and discover its Christian history. Join CFT to discover Fa’a Samoa (the Samoan Way).

TOUR ITINERARY

DAY 1
Tuesday 14 July 2020
Flight to Samoa

A visit to Samoa will make your spirit soar as Christianity infuses all aspects of Samoan life. Not only do Samoans have an exceptionally strong faith but also a long tradition of overseas mission work; within 9 years of the arrival of the London Missionary Society in 1830, 12 Samoan missionaries left their homeland to preach the gospel message across Melanesia. Our South Pacific journey begins with an evening departure from Sydney.

DAY 2
Wednesday 15 July 2020
Apia Sightseeing – Traditional Feast and Cultural Show

An early morning arrival in Apia (Upolu Island), Samoa’s bustling capital and gateway to this Pacific paradise. We have arranged for an early check-in so you can enjoy breakfast and then relax with a morning at leisure. At lunch you can watch a demonstration of traditional cloth (Elei) making. A mid-afternoon tour of Apia township includes the buzzing Fugalei Market, with its bounty of fresh produce and Samoan handicrafts. Enjoy a visit to the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, once the estate of the Scottish author (Treasure Island and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde). Stevenson fell in love with Samoa and Samoans, whom he called “God’s sweetest creations”, and in turn was fondly named “Tusitala” (‘writer of tales’). We finish our day at Mulinu’u, the seat of Government and site of the Parliament of Samoa, the Court House and burial place of many Samoan leaders and dignitaries.

Celebrate our first night in Samoa with a traditional Fiafia Night, eat delicious local food and be entertained with beautiful songs and wonderful dances.

DAY 3
Thursday 16 July 2020
Samoan Cultural Village

After a leisurely breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive to the other side of Upolu Island, passing through villages with lush and colourful gardens. Our destination is the historical Poutasi Village where we will be greeted by a traditional Welcome ‘Ava (kava) Ceremony by the village chiefs. Wander through the village to learn all aspects of Samoan cultural and traditional life, with workshops on weaving, woodworking, siapo cloth making, traditional tatau, dance and music. Visit the village school, arts and craft centre and ukulele factory and watch the making of the Samoa Umu (hot-stone earth oven) that will cook our lunch to perfection. As we savour our feast we will be entertained by a cultural performance before returning to our hotel. After this big meal you mightn’t feel like eating dinner but there are many nearby dining options to choose from (own choice and cost).

DAY 4
Friday 17 July 2020
Scenic Drive – Le Mafa Pass

We leave the hustle and bustle of Apia behind as we go in search of the laidback village lifestyle. Enjoy a beautiful drive along the rugged Eastern Coast, stopping at the stunning freshwater Piula Cave Pool located within the grounds of Piula Methodist Theological College. Go for a dip and delight in the crystal-clear spring waters before a visit to the pretty Falefa Waterfalls. From here we head inland via the scenic Le Mafa Pass, a beautiful drive through a wide valley lined with steep jagged mountain ridges. Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the blue Pacific below when we stop at the mountain peak lookout. We travel down the escarpment to the South Eastern Coast to stay in a delightful 4-star resort. Make the most of our beachside location by taking a dip in the turquoise waters or enjoying a walk along the white sand shoreline.

Tonight, we have the wonderful opportunity to join in an evening of prayer and fellowship at a local church in the adjoining village of Matatufu.

DAY 5
Saturday 18 July 2020
To Sua Trench – Ferry to Savai’i – Taga Blow Holes

Breakfast with a view of the blue Pacific Ocean and white sandy beach – what a way to start the day! After checkout we visit one of the most unusual places to swim on the planet, the incredible To Sua Trench. The 30-metre, almost perfectly symmetrical swimming hole is surrounded by lush vegetation and sits atop a cliff with views of the rugges rock formations and blue Pacific below. Go for a quick dip in the sparkling emerald green waters (be sure to get some photos). We travel along the spectacular coastline to the western end of Upolu to catch the ferry to the more relaxing Big Island of Savai’i. Check-in at our hotel and enjoy lunch before an afternoon tour of the Taga Blow Holes. These powerful blowholes are among the most spectacular on Earth with geyser-like explosions that shoot high into the air. Finish up with a swim in the cool waters of Afu A’au Waterfall. What a glorious day full of the wonders of God’s creation.

DAY 6
† Sunday 19 July 2020
Worship – Church Service and singing – Traditional lunch

The motto on Samoa’s crest is Fa’avae I Le Atua Samoa – ‘Samoa is founded on God’ – and Sunday is a day of worship in Samoa. After breakfast we join our Village hosts for a short walk to the church where the singing will enchant you. After the service enjoy a traditional Sunday feast (To’ona’i) followed by a chance to rest for the afternoon. Prepare for an evening fellowship with the local congregation over a cup of Samoan cocoa and a local favourite; panipopo (freshly baked coconut buns).

DAY 7
Monday 20 July 2020
Saleaula Lava Fields – Sapapalii Monument

After check-out, we drive westwards to the Saleaula lava fields, an impressive expanse of lava resulting from the volcanic eruptions of Mt Matavanu from 1905-1911. Visit the ruins of a local church and a renowned spot known as the “Virgin’s Grave”. Return eastwards towards Amoa Resort for lunch then continue on to the village of Sapapalii, visiting the monument marking the introduction of Christianity to Samoa. It was John Williams, as part of the London Missionary Society, who brought the word of God to these islands, arriving on August 24th 1830. We return to the wharf for our afternoon ferry back to Upolu Island.

DAY 8
Tuesday 21 July 2020
CCCS Malua Theological College Polynesian Night

Our last day in beautiful Samoa will make you smile and your soul sing as we tour the Leulumoega School of Fine Arts and the Congregational Christian Church of Samoa (CCCS) Museum. These are both located within the grounds of the CCCS Malua Theological College and we will also visit the onsite Iupeli Chapel. The CCCS is called Ekalesia Fa'alapotopotoga a Kerisiano i Samoa (EFKS) in Samoan and was originally known as the London Missionary Society (LMS).

Celebrate our last night together with a Farewell Dinner at the Sheraton’s Polynesian Night.

DAY 9
Wednesday 22 July 2020
Farewell Samoa

We say “tofa soifua” (farewell) to Samoa with an early morning flight to Australia. We arrive mid-morning into Sydney after a wonderful and spiritually uplifting holiday – the incredible beauty of the Samoan landscape and its friendly people will live on in our memories.
